Swansea City vs. Burnley
Minute Commentary
90' FINAL: SWANSEA CITY 1, BURNLEY 0
And Andre Marriner has blown the whistle to end the match, and Swansea have continued their impressive flight to safety with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Burnley. The Swans have claimed 14 points from eight matches since Carvahal's arrival and are now 15th in the table on 27 points thanks to Ki's goal on 81 minutes. Burnley are now winless in 10 league matches (0-5-5) and could slip into eighth depending on the result between Leicester City and champions-elect Manchester City later tonight. Thanks for following along and see you all again soon!
90' FABIANSKI CATCHES TAYLOR'S CROSS
That may be the final act of this match as Fabianski calmly collects a last-gasp cross sent in by Taylor.
90' SWANS SUPPORTERS IN FULL THROAT
The Swans faithful are on their feet in song as they try to hold out for three vital points in their bid to avoid the drop. They have been treated to a standout effort, and all they need now is the final whistle.
90' ANDRE AYEW DRAWS A FOUL
The Ghana international atones for his yellow card by picking up possession at midfield and drawing Burnley's defenders towards him before Taylor clatters into him on the right side, taking away precious seconds from the Clarets.
90' ANDRE AYEW GOES INTO THE BOOK
Marriner brandishes his yellow card for a third time this evening, as Andre Ayew goes into the book for a dangerous play as he slid in to try and win the ball from a Burnley defender.
90' FOUR MINUTES OF STOPPAGE TIME
The fourth official has signaled four minutes of stoppage time.
90' SWANSEA CITY SUB (3): KING IN, JORDAN AYEW OFF
Carvahal introduces Andy King into the match to try and see of this victory as Jordan Ayew is given a warm round of applause after a full shift of industry.
90' SWANSEA EARN CORNER
The hosts make a second break for a second goal, with Ki leaving it off for Abraham, but his shot is blocked before rolling over the end line for a corner.
87' JORDAN AYEW CAN'T KILL IT OFF
Jordan Ayew pushed for a second to kill off the match as he had the ball on the right side. After spinning away from a pair of defenders on the end line, he tried a sharp-angled shot to beat Pope low at the near post, but the Burnley keeper stood his ground and made the save with his feet.
86' BURNLEY SUB (3): NKOUDOU IN, GUDMUNDSSON OFF
Dyche's final throw of the dice sees him introduce Nkoudou as the Iceland international Gudmundsson makes way.
85' WELLS SHOT BLOCKED BY SWANS DEFENCE
Wells did well to win a 50-50 ball in the final third before getting a touch to push it to his left, but his shot from 20 yards is blocked by the defence.
82' SWANS TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH KI!!!
And there is the breakthrough that has been building for the hosts as Ki provides Swansea the lead. Naughton carries the ball from right to left into the penalty area and tries to lead Jordan Ayew at the top of the penalty area. It's too far for Ayew, but Ki is there as he stutter-steps around his teammate and drills a low shot into the lower left corner that Pope has no chance of finding. SWANSEA CITY 1, BURNLEY 0
81' BURNLEY SUB (2): WELLS ON, VOKES OFF
Clarets boss Sean Dyche makes his second switch of the match as Nakhi Wells replaces Vokes.
80' SWANSEA PRESSING FOR A BREAKTHROUGH
The Swans are running this match now as both Jordan Ayew and Naughton had shots on the right side deflected by Burnley's defence before they could test Pope.
78' A NEAR GOAL FOR SWANSEA!
Swansea were so close to grabbing the lead as Jordan Ayew got a toe on a cross from Carroll on the right side, but it wasn't far enough away from Pope, who while flat-footed, was able to extend his left arm to collect the ball. The best chance of the game thus far for the hosts.
76' CARVALHAL BEING AGGRESSIVE
Carvalhal must like what he sees from his side in this match to bring on Abraham in a bid to perhaps steal a victory. It will be interesting to see if the Ayew brothers can create space for the lanky youngster to ghost for scoring chances.
75' SWANSEA CITY SUB (2): ABRAHAM IN, DYER OFF
Carvalhal makes his second switch of the match, introducing the target forward Abraham for Dyer.
74' BURNLEY SUB (1): ARFIELD IN, LENNON OFF
Burnley make their first sub of the match as Lennon makes way for Arfield.
72' BURNLEY EARN FREE KICK 25 YARDS FROM GOAL
A foul by Fernandez gives the Clarets a free kick in a dangerous place. Gudmundsson unleashes a vicious left-footed shot that Clucas deflects with his head. Fabianski is able to punch away the deflection despite Vokes clattering into him, and Marriner stops play to have Clucas attended to after getting his bell rung. He turned his head sideways to delfect the shot and it got him right in the ear.
71' TAYLOR CONTINUES TO BE THE STAR OF BURNLEY'S DEFENCE
Another minute, another fundamentally sound play by Taylor, who calmly chests a cross by Lowton down for his goalkeeper to collect.
70' SWANS FAIL TO GET SHOT AWAY
Dyer and Ki link up well on the right side, and Ki tries to pick out Andre Ayew with a sliding cross from the right, but he's unable to turn and get a shot across goal from a tight angle inside the six-yard box as Burnley are awarded a goal kick.
67' BURNLEY CONTINUE TO PRESS
This has been Burnley's best spell of the match thus far as Gudmundsson whips a dangerous cross into the area. Mee gets a head to it, but fails to get over it as he sends it over the bar for a Swansea goal kick.
66' TAYLOR CROSS UNDERWHELMING
Burnley should have done better with a buildup after Barnes smartly knocked down a ball for the on-rushing Lennon. He sent it to Taylor on the left side, but his cross looped far too high and well wide of any Clarets player.
65' CLUCAS MISSES LATCHING ONTO CARROLL PASS OVER THE TOP
Carroll tries to pick out a charging Clucas with a pass over the top towards the left post, but it's a bit too deep for the attacking midfielder to get to as it goes over the end line for a Burnley goal kick.
63' CARROLL SENDS ONE HIGH AND WIDE
After Jordan Ayew tries to work a 1-2 with Naughton, the ball pops back out to Carroll, who is unable to settle the ball before trying a speculative shot from 20 yards to the left of Pope that goes well wide of the target.
61' KI EARNS A CORNER FOR SWANS
Ki has a shot deflected from inside the penalty area deflected over the touchline for a Swans corner after trying to patiently break down the defence on the right side. Carroll takes the corner and sends it to the top of the area for Dyer for an ambitious 1-2, but Carroll was offside as he raced laterally to receive the return pass.
59' SWANSEA CITY SUB (1): ANDRE AYEW IN, OLSSON OUT
Swansea have made their first switch of the match as Andre Ayew joins his brother Jordan on the pitch as Olsson makes way for the Ghana international.
58' SWANS FREE KICK
The ensuing free kick is taken by Ki, as his low right-footed shot goes around Lennon towards the far post, but Pope dives to his left for a comfortable save.
57' HENDRICK GETS A YELLOW CARD
Marriner reaches into his pocket for the second time today, and it's an easy call for a yellow card to Hendrick as he takes down Ayew 25 yards from goal as the Swans forward had peeled away and would have had a quality scoring chance.
56' FABIANSKI GETS A HAND TO GUDMUNDSSON'S SHOT
A poor clearing attempt by Fernandez gifts Burnley a chance as the ball falls to Gudmundsson on the right side of the penalty area. His rasping angled drive from 15 yards is calmly knocked over the bar by Fabianski, and the Clarets' ensuing corner fails to create a scoring chance.
54' TAYLOR AGAIN BREAKS UP A PLAY
Naughton and Dyer try to work a 1-2 on the right side, but Taylor again is keen to the danger and does well to dart into the penalty area and intercept the pass to prevent a shot on target.
52' BURNLEY WIN FREE KICK
Burnley win a free kick approximately 35 yards from goal after Naughton and Vokes have a mid-air collision. Gudmundsson surveys his team's run-up, and his low left-footed cross appears to be sent over the line by a Swans defender, but a goal kick is given.
50' BARNES GOES WIDE OF THE RIGHT POST
Some good industry by Burnley to keep the ball in Swansea's half results in a half-chance for the Clarets as Barnes is able to pick up the ball and run into the final third. He tries to pick out the lower right corner from 20 yards, but his curling right-footed shot goes wide of the post.
46' SWANSEA EARN QUICK CORNER
Swans go right to work from the re-start and earn a corner on the left after Olsson did some good work to get in the box on the right before dragging a cross back across goal that Ki had deflected over the end line. His in-swinging corner, however, fails to threaten as Burnley clear their lines.
46' BACK TO ACTION AT LIBERTY STADIUM
Referee Andre Marriner has blown his whistle and we have re-started in Wales looking for a breakthrough.
45' HALFTIME: SWANSEA CITY 0, BURNLEY 0
Referee Andre Marriner has blown his whistle to end the first half. Hosts Swansea City have held the ball in dangerous areas more than Burnley, but Vokes' turn and shoot effort still qualifies as the best chance either team had in the first 45 minutes. Swansea continue to primarily work the left side with Olsson, while Burnley have gone for a more direct approach trying to pick out Vokes and Barnes as targets. More still to come from Liberty Stadium!
45' MAWSON AND DYER ALMOST CONNECT
Dyer almost had a clean run on goal as Mawson sent a smart angled ball from the right sideline, but it had too much pace for Dyer to race onto as Pope let it roll over the end line.
45' ONE MINUTE OF ADDED TIME
The fourth official has signaled for one minute of added time.
45' SWANSEA CONTINUE TO FIND SPACE BUT LACK FINISHING EDGE
The hosts have done well to pen Burnley in their penalty area, but the lack of finishing continues to plague them as they are failing to get shots on target.
43' BURNLEY EARN CORNER
A good hold-up by Barnes, who leaves it off for Lowton, results in a corner from the right for the Clarets. Vokes gets his head to the outswinger but doesn't get over it as he sends it over the bar for a Swansea goal kick.
40' AYEW'S CROSS JUST ELUDES OLSSON
Swansea are enjoying the run of play at the moment, and Ayew whips an ambitious cross across goal from the right, but it has too much fizz for Olsson to side-volley from the six-yard box at the far post.
39' AYEW'S SHARP-ANGLE SHOT GOES AWRY
Swansea try a quick counter after a Burnley free kick by Gudmundsson fails to create anything, and after getting some space in the right channel, Ayew tries to squeeze off a sharp-angled shot on the right side that goes nowhere near the target.
37' CLUCAS GOES OVER THE BAR
Ki picks out Clucas with a pass at the top of the box nearly straight on, but his left-footed effort from 15 yards goes well over the bar. Clucas is disappointed with his attempt and knows he could have done better.
34' SWANS THREATEN IN THE PENALTY AREA
Swansea have a prolonged spell of possession deep in the penalty area by the left post as Ayew tries to slip a pass into Ki, who is unable to fnd space for a shot. Then it is Ayew's turn to try and get a shot off, but nothing materialises for the hosts.
32' GUDMUNDSSON SKIES OVER THE BAR
Lennon does well to create space on the right side of the penalty box just above the end line and sends a cross that Vokes fails to meet. It gets nodded on behind him to Gudmundsson, who settles it, but his left-footed effort from 12 yards goes over the bar for a Swans goal kick.
31' CLUCAS UNABLE TO CONTROL CROSS FOR A HEADER
Clucas called for the ball at the top of the box as he charged into the penalty area, but he was unable to set himself for the cross that came in from the right as he headed it up in the air with his back to goal before tumbling backward.
28' OLSSON GOES IN THE BOOK FOR SIMULATION
Referee Andre Marriner pulls out the yellow card for the first time in this match and it goes to the Swansea winger after he tumbled to the turf after trying to split Lowton and Cork on the left side. Marriner had a clear view of the play and wasted no time in brandishing the card to Olsson.
26' LENNON LOOKING FOR SPACE TO OPERATE
Lennon is playing on the right side, but he has yet to find much space to run either in the channel or at goal thus far. He and Barnes are still a work in progress when it comes to chemistry on offence.
25' BARNES SNUFFS OUT A CHANCE
Once more, the Burnley defender is at the center of the action, this time preventing Dyer from latching onto a through ball in the penalty area before turning wide and playing the ball safely up the sideline.
22' TAYLOR WITH SOME SMART DEFENDING
A nice piece of work by the Burnley man as he allows the ball to agonisingly roll over the end line for a goal kick as he successfully shielded Clucas from getting to it on the right sideline.
20' SWANSEA WIN A CORNER
Swans win a corner to the left of Pope, and Ki's in-swinger causes a moment of panic when it gets deflected to Carroll inside the box, but he cannot settle it and sends it back to Ki. The Korean tries to make something on the right, but his low shot is knocked away by the defence.
19' BARNES GOES OVER THE BAR
Burnley recollected themselves after the clearning and worked the ball to Barnes, whose half-chance from the top of the box just to the right of the post sailed over the bar for a Swansea goal kick.
18' FABIANSKI WITH A BRAVE PUNCH OUT
Gudmundsson sent a deep cross in from the left targeting Vokes at the far corner of the six-yard box, but Fabianski went up with the striker to punch it clear from danger.
14' LENNON WITH A PROFESSIONAL FOUL
Lennon wastes no time getting stuck into this match as he shoulders Olsson to the pitch as the Swans midfielder tried to bustle down the left side. No card from Marriner, but that might also stand as a final warning.
12' VOKES NARROWLY GOES WIDE OF THE POST
A rapid-fire build up of two passes, the last from Barnes, sees Vokes with an impressive turn and fire from 20 yards with a right-footed shot, but it curls just wide of the left post as it caught Fabianski a little flat-footed in response.
8' BURNLEY OUT TO END NINE-MATCH WINLESS SPELL
The Clarets enter this match seventh in the table on 36 points, one better than Leicester City, but they have not recorded a league win since beating Stoke in mid-December. Burnley have taken five points from their last nine matches and played champions-elect Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last time out.
6' A DREADFUL CLEARANCE BY POPE
Burnley gift Swansea a throw-in on the left side in their half of the pitch as Pope horribly slices a goal kick over the sideline following a back pass by Lowton. The hosts, however, fail to make anything of it.
3' HENDRICK HAS SHOT BLOCKED
Burnley get the first quality shot of the game, but Hendrick's blast from the top of the box straight on is blocked by the Swans defence before it can get to Fabianski. He was able to run up on the ball after a deflection left him with plenty of room to line up a right-footed shot.
1' CAN SWANS MAINTAIN THEIR PUSH
Swansea City enter this game 17th in the table on 24 points, ahead of both Stoke City and Huddersfield Town on goal difference as they have taken 11 points from their last six matches.
1' UNDERWAY
Referee Andre Marriner has blown his whistle, and we are underway in Wales!
0' AARON LENNON MAKES FULL CLARETS DEBUT
The big news for the visitors is Aaron Lennon making his first start since joining the Clarets. He appeared as a substitute in last weekend's 1-1 draw versus Newcastle United.
0' SWANSEA CITY-BURNLEY SCENE SETTER
Welcome to Match Day 27 in the Premier League, with today's contest taking place at Liberty Stadium in Wales where Swansea City look to continue their revival under Carlos Carvalhal as they face a Burnley side with a chance to close ground between themselves and Arsenal for sixth in the table.
