West Bromwich Albion vs. Crystal Palace
Minute Commentary
90' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The full time whistle blows and it is honours even at the Hawthorns. It finishes West Brom 0-0 Crystal Palace.
90' SAKO COMES ON
Bakary Sako comes on for the final minute or so, repacing Andros Townsend. What an utterly pointless sub.
90' WBA 0-0 PALACE
There will be three minutes of stoppage time at the Hawthorns.
89' WBA 0-0 PALACE
We have travelled back in time 20 minutes or so. A deep cross from the right finds Sam Field at the back post. He waits for the ball to sit down before striking goalwards on the volley, but once more the outstanding Sakho is on hand to throw himself in the way and block. It's not going to happen for the Baggies is it?
87' WBA 0-0 PALACE
James McClean has been like a toy you wind up at the back since coming on, full of energy and vigour in an effort to try and change things for his team, but he is a hindrance here as he is too eager to win the ball back in his own half, taking down Loftus-Cheek and picking up a quick caution.
85' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Another opportunity wasted from the hosts and they are adding up - a frustrating afternoon for Alan Pardew so far, as dominant as they have been in this second half. Salomon Rondon escapes his marker from a corner, but glances a header wide of the far post.
83' WBA 0-0 PALACE
James McClean is doing everything in his power to find the breakthrough for his side as he is seeing a lot of the ball in wide areas so far, but all of his crosses have easily been seen off by the Palace backline.
80' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Another change from the home bench as we enter the last ten minutes, with James McClean replacing Hal Robson-Kanu.
78' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Things are just starting to peter out at the Hawthorns, which will be music to the ears of Palace fans as they have comfortably been second best in the West Midlands. It hasn't been boring by any means, but anyone who hasn't watched this match will not be in a rush for the highlights package.
74' WBA 0-0 PALACE
West Brom force a good move down the middle of the park for a change, with Salomon Rondon making a nice run off his marker to peel off and get on the end of an incisive Field pass. His resultant shot is straight at Julian Speroni from 12 yards though and another one bites the dust for the hosts.
72' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Ahmed Hegazi is in a spot of bother here as he is on the ground following a stray elbow from Benteke, but there was no intent from the striker. I think the defender was trying to put his opponent in trouble with the referee there, but the man in the middle was rightly having none of it.
70' WBA 0-0 PALACE
There are 20 minutes left at the Hawthorns and it is definitely the away side who would take this result at full time, regardless of their perilous position at the bottom of the table. Palace have yet to win on the road this season and it is easy to see why.
67' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Sam Field had a quiet first half, but he has been very involved since the restart, looking lively going forward and putting in a shift defensively when needed as well. He looks a promising prospect and someone for incoming boss Alan Pardew to build a team around perhaps.
65' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The Eagles simply can't keep hold of the ball here and they aren't even getting Zaha into any dangerous areas like they were in the first 45 minutes. It looks a long way back for Palace if West Brom were to take the lead in this match - they have probably deserved it.
63' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Another half chance for the Baggies as Rondon strikes an effort in from the angle and Speroni palms it away, but only as far as Field. He has a narrow angle to negotiate with, and his attempt is blocked by the sliding Joel Ward. Whether it was going in or not, I'm not sure, but the pressure from the hosts is increasding.
60' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Crystal Palace have offered the square root of nothing in the final third so far in this half and if there is to be a goal at the Hawthorns, you'd bet you bottom dollar that it will be West Brom who bag it. I've been wrong before, however. Many times.
58' WBA 0-0 PALACE
We are just about to tick into the final half-hour in the West Midlands and surely Roy Hidgson is thinking of changes? His side have been smothered at the start of this second period and the likes of Jason Puncheon and Bakary Sako will surely be warming up before long?
56' WBA 0-0 PALACE
That is a huge chance and it is another one that falls by the wayside. Jay Rodriguez benefits from some uncertain Palace defending and finds himself in on goal from a simple knockdown from Rondon. His first touch takes the ball too far in front of him, however, and it allows Speroni to get out and thwart him as he tries to find the far corner.
54' WBA 0-0 PALACE
There have been no changes from either side at the start of this second half. It is Palace who look the side more in need of a switch-up at the moment.
51' WBA 0-0 PALACE
It is a case of copy and paste in this half as it is the hosts who are seeing all of the ball and look full of life, with the Hawthorns faithful looking to get behind their team and create a hostile atmosphere for the visitors.
48' WBA 0-0 PALACE
It is much the same as the start to the first half thus far, with West Brom on top. They force a half chance as well as a cross from the right sits nicely for Sam Field, with the youngster's eyes lighting up as the ball falls, but his volley is blocked by Mamadou Sakho. Great defending.
46' WBA 0-0 PALACE
We are back under way at the Hawthorns, with both sides looking for that crucial deadlock-breaker.
45' WBA 0-0 PALACE
This never had the potential to be a classic on the face of it, and the scoreline hardly suggests that it has been, but there has been more than enough interest at the Hawthorns so far, with Alan Pardew taking charge of his first match with West Brom against his former employers Crystal Palace. It is the Baggies who started the better of the two, with great chances from six yards out wasted respectively by Hal Robson-Kanu and Ahmed Hegazi, before the Eagles started to work their way into the match. Wilfried Zaha was always the main man for the visitors and he had an appeal for a penalty waved away when Ben Foster got a hand to the ball first under pressure from the Ivorian, but an indirect free-kick should have been given because there was a back-pass that preceded it. Christian Benteke came to life in the last five minutes and squandered a one-on-one opportunity before planting a header into the arms of Foster from a corner. It is all well set up for the second half, which we will have live text commentary of in just a couple of moments.
45' WBA 0-0 PALACE
No goals to report at the break at the Hawthorns between two teams in desperate need of points.
44' WBA 0-0 PALACE
From the resulting corner aftet that Benteke chance, the big Belgian gets up well to power a free header goalwards, but Ben Foster is always behind it. Either side of the Baggies' stopper, though, and that was in.
42' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Just as I write that they will grow into the game, the visitors go so close to taking the lead. Benteke is slipped through on goal by Luka Milivojevic, but his dinked effort is brilliantly saved by the onrushing Ben Foster.
40' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Five minutes to go until half time in what has been an entertaining first half at the Hawthorns and it has been quite hard to call where this one might go. Albion look the more accomplished and tidy of the two sides, but the Eagles always look a threat through Zaha and you get the sense they will grow into this game as it goes.
38' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Once again Palace attack down, you gussed it, their left-hand side and Zaha cuts inside onto his favoured right foot, but his on-target effort from 12 yards is bravely blocked by the body of Jonny Evans.
36' WBA 0-0 PALACE
One thing that is noticeable from a tactical standpoint so far is that West Brom are willing to mix things up, sometimes going long, sometimes hitting it wide and sometimes playing through the pitch, while Palace are almost exclusively looking out left to Zaha every time they get the ball. Alan Pardew winning the touchline battle up to now.
34' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The Gareth Barry substitution remains a mystery for the moment, as the midfielder was shaking his head as he walked off without any real signs of a limp, but it is a like-for-like change, so you can't really see how it is going to switch thins up for the hosts. Strange.
32' WBA 0-0 PALACE
An early change to report as it seems that Gareth Barry has picked up an injury for the hosts, so the veteran midfielder is replaced by Claudio Yacob. Barry didn't look too put out as he left the pitch, so it isn't certain that it is an enforced sub, but surely it can't be tactical at this stage and given how well West Brom have started the match?
29' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The first 30 minutes of Alan Pardew's reign has been positive so far, but he will be annoyed that his team's good start hasn't been rewarded with a goal. Rondon and Robson-Kanu have really been putting themselves about so far and making life difficult for the Palace backline.
27' WBA 0-0 PALACE
You can't shake the feeling that Crystal Palace should be utilising the aerial prowess of Christian Benteke more, as they are struggling to get out when they do get possession of the ball and seem over-reliant on Wilfried Zaha thus far.
25' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The first 25 minutes of this match had flown by and it has been a very competitive match so far in the West Midlands. West Brom have been the better side so far, but make no mistake about it, the pace of Zaha on the counter for Palace is causing all sorts of problems.
23' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Just looking at that penalty incident again, while it is not a penalty, there was a backpass in the build-up, which is why Foster was trying to dribble round Zaha, so the fact that he handled the ball means the visitors should have at least had an indirect free-kick in a very dangerous area.
21' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Another huge chance for Albion to hit the front as Ahmed Hegazi gets free from a corner, but he somehow manages to plant his header wide of the far post completely unopposed. Plenty of action at the Hawthorns.
19' PENALTY APPEAL
Tentative appeals for a spot kick from the visitors here as Ben Foster loses control of the ball in his own area and ends up taking the waiting Zaha down to ground, but he crucially did get his hand on the ball as well. Clumsy from Foster, but he just about gets away with it.
16' WBA 0-0 PALACE
As you would expect from West Brom and from a team under the tutelage of Alan Pardew, they are looking to utilise the wide areas and float dangerous crosses in and so far they are looking very likely from those positions. If they are to take the lead, my money is a header from a pinpoint delivery.
14' WBA 0-0 PALACE
We've got a real game on our hands now folks. End-to-end as Crystal Palace go straight up the other end and work a chance through Wilfried Zaha, but his shot from the angle can only find the side netting. This one has goals in it.
12' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The hosts are really playing some good stuff here and they manufacture another good move which ends with Salomon Rondon powering an effort into the arms of Wayne Hennessey on the spin from 25 yards.
10' WBA 0-0 PALACE
Here is a golden chance out of nowhere, and West Brom should be ahead. A cross from the left byline finds Hal Robson-Kanu six yards out, but it is slightly behind him and the striker fires over when he really should have been hitting the target.
8' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The home fans are doing everything in their power to create a positive, intimidating atmosphere in Alan Pardew's embryonic stages of his Albion career. They are the team seeing all of the ball, but they are struggling to unpick the lock in the final third - still plenty of time yet, though.
5' WBA 0-0 PALACE
The first five minutes have been quite encouraging for Alan Pardew's men, as they are penning their opponents in and Palace have yet to get out of their own half.
3' WBA 0-0 PALACE
It is the hosts who are doing most of the early running, but there are no chances to speak of as of yet at the Hawthorns.
1' West Brom 0 - 0 Crystal Pal
The referee blows his whistle and we are under way in the Midlands.
0' West Bromwich v Crystal Palace
We have about five minutes to kick-off at the Hawthorns. It's a cloudy afternoon, cool at seven degrees celsius, but with little wind not feeling too bad at all. Join me, Steve Nicholls, presently for full live commentary.
0' WEST BROMWICH v CRYSTAL PALACE

0' WEST BROMWICH v CRYSTAL PALACE
PARDEW TO PUNISH OLD PLAYERS? After just a year out of the game Alan Pardew is back in charge of a struggling West Bromwich side, and as fate would have it his first match back in the big time of English football comes against the team who cut short his previous job. Crystal Palace, sitting at the foot of the table, are the visitors to the Hawthorns today, but Pardew knows how dangerous the Eagles can be, especially with the players they have to set up a counter-attacking style away from home. After the somewhat surprising dismissal of Tony Pulis, the Baggies went two games unbeaten under the now departed Gary Megson, although they will feel they should have had more from the respective fixtures Tottenham and Newcastle having led in both games. So, this afternoons hosts have some momentum behind them, and Pardew will be desperate for that to continue and push his former employers into further trouble. EAGLES NEED TO TAKE FLIGHT SOON After a truely dreadful start to the season, there is no doubt that Crystal Palace step by step and game by game have been showing slight signs of recovery under the wily and experienced Roy Hodgson. However the longer they stay mired at the bottom of the table, the more deflated they will inevitably become, whether progress is being made or not. A few late heroics in recent league fixtures, noteably against West Ham and Stoke, have helped massively in ensuring the Eagles haven't been cut adrift at the foot of the standings, and they are only three points from seventeenth - the position occupied by todays opponents. Hodgsons' men are yet to win an away game this season, but with the form they are in and West Brom struggling with a cloud of uncertainty following the not-too-popular appointment of Pardew, they may just feel that today could be their lucky day.
