West Bromwich Albion vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
90' MAN CITY DEFEAT WEST BROM IN FIVE-GOAL CONTEST
Manchester City slightly relieved at the final whistle as they edge West Brom 3-2 at the Hawthorns, despite a late rally from the hosts.
90' WEST BROM 2-3 MANCHESTER CITY
There is just a minute left, but West Brom have hope thanks to a clanger! A long ball comes forward and Otamendi tries to chest it back to Ederson, doesn't get enough on it and Matt Phillips nips in to neatly find the roof of the net with a tidy volley. Is there enough time left for a dramatic leveller?
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
City cruising? Scrap that! A horrendus mistake from Nicolas Otamendi allows substitute Matt Phillips to half the deficit!
90' THREE ADDITIONAL MINUTES
There are three added minutes to be played in this one. City cruising.
90' ONE MINUTE REMAINS
There is one minute of normal time remaining at the Hawthorns in a game that was over as soon as Raheem Sterling tapped home off the bench.
88' INCREDIBLE SAVE
How are City stuck on three goals?! A cross from Walker finds Silva, who has so much time to control, spin and shoot from six yards, but with the goal at his mercy, Silva finds the outstretched leg of Ben Foster. It won't make a difference in the context of the game, but that is an outstanding save.
86' SITTER FROM DE BRUYNE
A massive concern for the rest of the league that Man City have been below their best today, but are still comfortably defeating West Brom away from home. It should be four as well as a lethal counter-attack ends with Sterling teeing up De Bruyne with just the keeper to beat, but the Belgian skews his attempt wide of the near post.
84' JESUS REPLACED
Not one of his better games, but still a good shift from Gabriel Jesus as he comes off for a rest, with Ilkay Gundogan coming on for the final stages of this match.
82' MCCLEAN COMES ON
Grzegorz Krychowiak is the man to make way for James McClean as Tony Pulis tries to make the pitch wide and put City's backline under pressure from aerial deliveries. Back to basics.
80' MCCLEAN BEING READIED
Ten minutes left at the Hawthorns and Tony Pulis is giving James McClean some instructions on the touchline. Surely he should be starting games for the hosts?
78' TOYING WITH THEM
The Baggies have ran out of steam and the visitors are simply playing with them now, conserving their energy ahead of a mammoth midweek clash in Naples in the Champions League.
76' NO FIGHT LEFT
As has been the case for the vast majority of the game, the match is being played in West Brom's half as we tick towards full time and there is a sense all around the ground and on the pitch that this one is well and truly over. Tony Pulis' struggles look set to continue, but Pep Guardiola will continue to live on cloud nine.
74' WEALTH OF TALENT
Man City are teo goals clear at one of the toughest grounds of the league and on the bench they have two ex-Barcelona players, a former Real Madrid man, an ex-Dortmund midfielder and one of the best number nines in world football. Eek.
72' PHILLIPS GETS A RUN OUT
Surely this change should have been made about ten minutes or so, as it will be too late now. Matt Phillips replaces Gareth McAuley for the hosts, but it is unlikely he will see much of the ball, such is the control City are exerting.
70' OUT OF IDEAS
In the build-up to this game Tony Pulis said he was going to do something different with his team to try and combat City. He hasn't. It has been attack vs defence and after City finally managed to pick the lock, the game was over. I am speaking in past tense and there are still 20 minutes left. That is indicative of how toothless West Brom have been.
68' STERLING ON THE GOAL TRAIL
Raheem Sterling has now equalled his goal tally from last season as he nets his seventh of the season. With Aguero and Jesus the chief goal getters who will always deliver and Sane and Sterling consistently delivering now, it very much seems as though this could well be a one-horse title race. They are scary good.
66' WEST BROM 1-3 MANCHESTER CITY
Knife through butter. City work it from one side to the other as De Bruyne is on the left, picks out Silva in the middle, who in turn spots Walker in space out right. The full-back delivers a pearler of a cross into the middle for substitute Raheem Sterling to gleefully tap home. That will surely be that.
65' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Game over? It very much looks that way as Raheem Sterling gives City daylight with a tap-in!
64' JESUS IN THE BOOK
Gabriel Jesus is the latest player to be cautioned as his show of dissent after losing the ball earns him a yellow card.
62' STERLING ON FOR SILVA
Bernardo Silva's race is run and he is replaced by Raheem Sterling for the final 30 minutes or so. The Englishman will offer more pace and direct threat than Silva for the visitors.
60' KEEPING THEIR SHAPE
The home side are keeping their shape really well here and they are limiting to City to very little, despite their territorial dominance of this game. There will have to come a time when West Brom branch out a little going forward, though, if they are to find an equaliser in this one.
58' ROBSON-KANU COMES ON
We have out first change of the afternoon, as Salomon Rondon is replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu for the hosts. Just over half an hour remaining at the Hawthorns now.
56' WILD FROM DE BRUYNE
Even though they are leadinf, there is a discernible sense of frustration around Man City at the moment as they struggle to break clear of their opponents. Another pot shot from range, again from De Bruyne, flies well over and the tepid nature of this second half continues.
54' BOTH SIDES HAVE OPTIONS
As this game enters something of a lull, it is natural to look to the benches of both teams, and it is obvious that City have options in the form of Yaya Toure, Raheem Sterling and a certain Sergio Aguero, but as they chase the game, Wrst Brom will surely start to look to Matt Phillips, Matt Phillips and Hal Robson-Kanu?
52' CITY ON TOP
The usual and expected flow of the match has now been resumed, with the away outfit dominating possession and patiently trying to creat chances while their opponents sit deep and frustrate.
50' SLICED WIDE
First signs of attacking intent from City in this half as they burst forward down the right through Kyle Walker, but after getting into the area, his effort towards the near corner flies wide of the post.
48' DECENT START
Tony Pulis obviously told his players to get on the front foot more at the break, as they have started this second period in very positive fashion, taking the game to City rather than sitting back and waiting for mistakes.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
We are back up and running at the Hawthorns. No changes to report for either side.
45' WEST BROM 1-2 MANCHESTER CITY
In what was a very entertaining first period at the Hawthorns, Man City are the team with a precious lead at the halfway point. They took the lead in wonderful fashion when Leroy Sane picked up possession on the left-hand side of the area, shifted it onto his right foot and brilliantly found the far corner with a precise effort. Seconds later and West Brom were level, though, as a lovely ball over the top from Gareth Barry found Jay Rodriguez, who eluded a clumsy John Stones, took a great first touch and lobbed Ederson. Salomon Rondon, running alongside him, was in an offside position, but did not interfere with play. The early drama didn't stop there, however, as the Citizens went up the other end and retook the lead in fortuitous circumstances as Fernandinho's ambitious shot from range took a deflection off Barry before squirming into the far corner. The visitors were in charge for the rest of the half, with David Silva missing a wonderful opportunity with a free header six yards out, but there is just one goal in it going into the second period. Make sure you don't miss it.
45' MAN CITY LEAD AT THE BREAK
The half time whistle sounds and Man City are leading West Brom 2-1 at the break.
45' TWO ADDITIONAL MINUTES
There will be two minutes added on at the end of this first half.
44' AMBITIOUS EFFORT
It is still all City, but they are struggling to break down their opponents now, with West Brom looking typically resolute. De Bruyne chances his arm from range with his left peg, but it sails high, wide and not very handsome. A minute left until the interval.
42' STRUCK OVER
It is Leroy Sane who takes it, but his left-footed curler is a yard or two too high. West Brom sprint up the other end, with Rodriguez setting up striker partner Rondon with a fine cross from the left, but the latter directs his near post header over.
40' DANGEROUS AREA
Jonny Evans is walking a disciplinary tightrope here. He trips Bernardo Silva right on the edge of the area and is perhaps lucky to avoid a second caution. A free-kick in a very dangerous position here for City.....
38' QUIET DE BRUYNE
It has been an impressive performance from City, but more as a team as no individuals are standing out. Man of the moment Kevin De Bruyne has been very quiet, as has the teenage prodigy Gabriel Jesus. David Silva and Leroy Sane have been the visitors' most likely outlets so far.
36' POOR CROSSES
Anyone else yet to be convinced by Bernardo Silva? The former Monaco man has shown almost nothing since arriving at Man City and his only contribution to this match so far has been to whip in two or three crosses that easily sailed behind for goal kicks.
34' TARGET DELPH?
It might be easier said than done, but considering he is a midfielder that has had a long-term injury, surely West Brom should be targetting him as a weakness? Since playing in that position, no team has really gone after him and the home side are the same. Strange - someone have a word with Pulis at the break.
32' IN WEST BROM'S HALF
The entire game is being played in West Brom's half at the moment, or so it seems anyway. The hosts need half time badly - no clear chances since that Silva header, though.
30' HIGH PRESSING
West Brom are really struggling to beat the press at the moment, as they don't want to revert to the long ball tactic, despite the cliches about Tony Pulis teams' style of play. The visitors are pressing in the right areas at the right times and Pep Guardiola will be a very happy man at present - not that he looks it.
28' IMPORTANT FIVE MINUTES
You get the sense that this is a very imprtant period of time in this match coming up for Tony Pulis' men, as their illustrious opponents are all over them here and look like scoring every time they come forward. The hosts are one goal away from seeing this game get away from them and they need to keep solid for the time being.
26' SILVA SITTER
That should be a two-goal lead for Man City, but David Silva wastes it. Kyle Walker lays the ball off to Gabriel Jesus, who floats a dream of a ball into the mixer. Silva is in all sorts of room six yards out, but sends his free header over the bar.
24' CITY IN CONTROL
The away side are in control of this match, as you'd expect, but they look very jittery at the back and the longer West Brom can keep it to one goal, the more pressure they can put Stones and co under pressure. This game is fascinatingly poised at the moment.
22' EVANS BOOKED
Frustration building at the Hawthorns as Jonny Evans goes in very late on Kevin de Bruyne, catching his heel with his studs. That is a deserved booking for the defender.
20' STONES AT FAULT
Having said earlier that John Stones was the most improved player in the league, the centre-back did his best to make a fool of me with some poor defending for Rodriguez's goal. He was caught out by an easy ball over the top and then didn't really do enough to put the forward off as he finished past Ederson.
18' SHOULD LEVELLER HAVE STOOD?
The visitors may well feel as though justice has been done as they felt that Salomon Rondon, in an offside position, interfered with play as he ran alongside Jay Rodriguez for the striker's equaliser, but it would be very harsh to say he was interfering with play. Either way, parity did not last long for the Baggies.
16' WEST BROM 1-2 MANCHESTER CITY
Every attack is leading to a goal and this is great stuff for the neutrals! Tony Pulis will be tearing his hair out, or whatever is left of it, with the soft nature of it, though. Fernandinho picks up possession in a neutral area in the West Brom half, takes a very ambitious shot, scuffs it, but a deflection off Gareth Barry sees it trickle into the far corner. Not a pretty goal, but Pep won't care.
15' GOOOAAALLL!!!
What on earth is going on at the Hawthorns! Man City simply pop up the other end and take the lead through Fernandinho!
14' WEST BROM 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY
What a start at the Hawthorns! Another lovely goal that is simple, but oh so effective, as Gareth Barry dinks a gorgeous ball over the top and Jay Rodriguez bypasses the sleeping John Stones, takes a great first touch and lobs Ederson to equalise for the hosts. Game on!
13' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Script ripped up as Jay Rodriguez brings West Brom level within minutes with a tidy finish!
11' WEST BROM 0-1 MANCHESTER CITY
A goal that is beautiful in its simplicity. A loose ball in midfield is pounced on by Kyle Walker, who brilliantly spreads it wide first time to Leroy Sane on the left of the area. The sprightly German quickly shuffles his feet to evade his marker and releases a fierce shot into the far corner past the stranded Ben Foster. Outstanding.
10' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ten minutes gone and Manchester City take the lead through Leroy Sane! Unstoppable!
9' PATIENT POSSESSION
This game is starting to settle into the pattern we all predicted it would now after a frantic start, with City seeing a lot of the ball in opposition territory and the home side sitting back with numbers behind the ball.
7' CRUCIAL BLOCK
The visitors start to flex their muscles as they burst forward down the left through David Silva. The Spaniard's cross-shot isn't converted by Jesus, but the loose ball is blasted goalwards by Leroy Sane. Fortunately for the home fans, Ahmed Hegazy is on hand to heroically block.
5' GOOD DEFENDING
First sign of any danger on the counter from West Brom as they release Salomon Rondon down the channel of the area, but John Stones stands his ground brilliantly to deny the Venezuelan. Is Stones the most improved player in the league from last season I wonder?
3' EARLY PRESSURE
Man City are floating a couple of early testing balls into the West Brom area, but, unsurprisngly, the hosts have dealth with them easily enough.
1' KICK OFF
After a minute's silence which was interrupted by an unfortunate minority of fans, we are up and running at the Hawthorns.
0' FULL TEAMS
West Brom: Foster, McAuley, Hegazy, Evans, Nyom, Livermore, Krychowiak, Barry, Gibbs, Rodriguez, Rondon. Subs: Myhill, McClean, Brunt, Phillips, Yacob, Chadli, Robson-Kanu. Manchester City: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Jesus, Sane. Subs: Bravo, Danilo, Mangala, Toure, Sterling, Gundogan, Aguero.
0' PEP PURRING
In the build up to this match Tony Pulis described Manchester City as the best side in Europe, perhaps seeking to put pressure on their illustrious opponents, but perhaps speaking what he believed to be the truth as well. If it is a case of mind games, it didn’t fare so well for Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, who was gushing in his praise of Pep Guardiola’s side, and was eventually proved right when the two teams met in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month. The fact is, City are unbeaten in all competitions this season and while it has been mentioned, not least by Guardiola himself, that they had a very impressive start to the last campaign, there is a distinct sense that this time around the Citizens are not going to fall away. If the visitors can overcome the tricky obstacle that is facing West Brom at the Hawthorns, then the feeling that City will conquer all in their wake on the domestic scene in 2017-18 will only grow stronger.
0' BAGGIES NOT BOUNCING
West Brom began the season in fine fashion to build on a positive campaign last time around under the pragmatic stewardship of the ever-likeable Tony Pulis. However, after two consecutive league victories to kickstart 2017-18, West Brom have yet to taste success in England’s top flight since, with the Baggies currently positioned in 13th, just two points above the drop zone as we approach the quarter mark of the season. It is the time of the year when chairmen around the country start to pull the trigger if their club is struggling, as Craig Shakespeare and Ronald Koeman have found out in recent weeks and should West Brom’s struggles continue any longer, Pulis’ name might just start becoming more prominent in the list of favourites for the next manager to face the axe. It doesn’t get any easier for this afternoon’s hosts, with a rampant Manchester City the visitors to the Hawthorns today – they haven’t lost all season and Pulis and his men will be desperate to put an end to that record here.
