Watford vs. Arsenal
Minute Commentary
90' WATFORD CLAIM LAST GASP WIN OVER ARSENAL
That was almost the last action of the game as Watford claim a dramatic last-gasp victory over Arsenal! It ends Watford 2-1 Arsenal at Vicarage Road.
90' WATFORD 2-1 ARSENAL
Marco Silva continues to be the hero and Arsene Wenger the perpetual villain! Arsenal were comfortable at the break and now they have lost it. A long ball causes chaos in the Arsenal defence and after Petr Cech uncertainly paws the ball away, Richarlison sees a shot heroically blocked by Per Mertesacker on its way to an empty net. Then the stadium holds its breath as Cleverley strides up to the loose ball ten yards out. There are defenders in his way, but he keeps his composure to find the roof of the net. Cue bedlam!
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Last minute drama of the highest order! Tom Cleverley has won it for Watford with a close-range finish! Vicarage Road is bouncing!
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
The corner is easily cleared and we now tick into four minutes of injury time. As things stand, the visitors will be the happier with this. That wouldn't have been conceivable at half time.
89' CORNER TO ARSENAL
Ninety seconds left on the clock and Arsenal have a corner. Surely not?
87' HOLDING ENTERS THE FRAY
This tells you everything you need to know about how Arsenal have lost control here. Jack Wilshere was warming up, but following the last few minutes, Arsene Wenger has had a change of heart and defender Rob Holding is going to have the last few minutes of this game instead.
85' BLASTED OVER
Massive chance for Richarlison following a free-for-all in the Arsenal box, but his overhead kick on the spin from six yards flies over. It wouldn't have counted anyway because the referee had already blown for a non-existent foul.
83' OFF THE WOODWORK
Inches away! Watford are a lick of paint away from a winner! Another brilliant run from that man Richarlison ends with his cross being blocked, but Deeney picks up the pieces on the byline. He tees up Capoue on the edge of the area, whose shot deflects wickedly off Mertesacker, with Cech going the other way. It looks in all the way, but strikes the post and Arsenal survive.
81' CAPOUE REPLACES PEREYRA
Etienne Capoue is given the last ten minutes to impress, with Roberto Pereyra given a rest. This match is fascinatingly poised at the moment.
79' WATFORD ON TOP
Any sign of Watford settling for their point now they have the equaliser they were looking for? Not a bit of it, and that shows the ambition Marco Silva has for this team. A point from a losing position is not enough - he wants his men to give their fans something more to cheer about on the journey home.
77' GIROUD FOR LACAZETTE
As is the pattern in all of Arsenal's games, Alexandre Lacazette is withdrawn late on, with Olivier Giroud given the task of finding a goal for his team in the closing moments. No pressure then, big man.
75' NEARLY A SECOND
He's quickly becoming a hero in these parts, is Richarlison. The youngster escapes again down the left with a great run and drives a great effort that flies inches wide of the near post. Shameful playacting for the penalty, mind.
73' WATFORD 1-1 ARSENAL
I tell you what, Arsenal have been hard done by here! Mesut Ozil is one-on-one at one end, is far too casual with his finish and Gomes launches a counter. Seconds later and Richarlison tries to take on Hector Bellerin on the left side of the area, throws himself to the floor and Deeney tucks the penalty home down the middle. That was a poor decision from the man in the middle - a huge climax to this match potentially now!
72' GOOOAAALLLL!!!!
No mistake from Troy Deeney from the spot and we're all level!
71' PENALTY TO WATFORD
Seconds after Mesut Ozil misses a huge chance to put Arsenal out of sight, Richarlison wins Watford a penalty!
69' ATTACK VS DEFENCE
It is not often you say this, but Arsenal are being penned in by Watford here and the home crowd are getting into this the more and more time that goes on - is there a leveller on the horizon for the men in yellow?
67' APPLYING PRESSURE
This is very much in the air at the moment, with Arsenal looking a distinct threat on the counter, while Watford are coming on strong as enter the last 20 minutes. A succession of corners are all dealt with by a surprisingly sturdy Gunners backline.
65' BRILLIANT SAVE
Heurelho Gomes has just kept his team in the game with a huge save. Mesut Ozil nearly with an instant impact as he slides a wonderful ball into the path of Iwobi, who opens his body up nicely from the angle and nearly finds the far corner, with Gomes sharply getting down to bat it behind for a corner.
63' DEENEY COMES ON
Troy Deeney comes on for the hosts to a rapturous reception, with the anonymous Andre Gray the man to make way.
61' OZIL FOR WELBECK
As we tick into the final half an hour, Danny Welbeck succumbs to what looks to be a hamstring injury and Mesut Ozil comes on for the away side.
59' VITAL HAND
Top work from Petr Cech as a deep cross looks destined to be nodded home at the far stick by Doucoure, but at the last minute, the keeper gets across to paw it behind for a corner. End-to-end at present.
57' SPACES OPENING UP
There is still more then 30 minutes left, but Watford are leaving a lot of gaps for Arsenal to exploit, which they have yet to do.Once more, Iwobi charges forward on the break with Welbeck screaming for a simple through ball, but the former misses it and gets dispossessed in the end. There are more goals in this for the Gunners.
55' LOOKED THE WRONG WAY
A huge chance on the counter here for the visitors as they have a three-on-two situation with Lacazette the man to charge forward with the ball. He has Iwobi marked on one side and Bellerin sprinting into acres of space on the other, but he uses the Nigerian and the pass is dreadful. Had he looked the other way, the wing-back would have been in on goal. Waste.
53' BENT WIDE
More energy and endeavour from Richarlison down the left, as he uses the selfless decoy run from Miguel Angel Britos to cut inside and work some room 18 yards out. However, his effort lacks the requisite bend and floats well wide of the far post. More like it from the hosts.
50' ZONAL MARKING
It is interesting to note that the horrendous defending that saw Watford concede was due to zonal marking, but they haven't altered the tactic yet. Every time the Gunners have a set piece, they are getting a run on the Watford defenders. I, amongst a plethora of others, simply cannot understand zonal marking.
48' BETTER FROM WATFORD
Marco Silva clearly had some stern words with his players at the break, because they are already showing more intent than they did in almost the entirety of the first period. Defensively, the last five minutes of the first half aside, they have been sound, they just need more going forward.
46' BACK IN ACTION
The second half is go at Vicarage Road - no changes for either side to report.
45' WATFORD 0-1 ARSENAL
It hasn't been a classic by any means, but Arsenal fans will not care a jot about that. Watford managed to contain their more illustrious opponents for long spells, with neither side having any clear chances to speak of, up until the goal, which nearly opened the floodgates for the visitors. The interval came at the right time for the Hornets, who were looking secure at the back until a loss in concentration from a corner saw Per Mertesacker rise unopposed to power home a bullt header. The impressive Hector Bellerin guided a free shot from ten yards wide moments later and Arsene Wenger's men go into the break with momentum firmly on their side. Marco Silva has a massive teamtalk to give now - join us back here in a couple of moments to see if it bears fruit.
45' ARSENAL LEAD AT THE BREAK
The free-kick is easily seen off and the half time whistle sounds, with Arsenal leading by a single goal at Vicarage Road.
45' DANGEROUS POSITION
Just a minute of the first period left and Arsenal have a free-kick in a very promising position. Hold your horses, folks.
45' THREE ADDITIONAL MINUTES
There will be three minutes added on at the end of the first half due to that injury to Richarlison.
44' SHOULD BE TWO
Watford are crumbling right in front of our eyes. Seconds after Granit Xhaka is granted a free shot 20 yards out that is saved, Welbeck finds Bellerin in all all sorts of room ten yards out, but with his lesser favoured left foot, he bends his shot just wide of the far post. The half time whistle can't come soon enough for them now.
42' WATFORD NEED HALF TIME
All of a sudden, the hosts are desperate for half time, with Arsenal trying for a killer second before the interval. Danny Welbeck escapes down that troublesome right-hand side again, but his cross is overhit. Where do the Hornets go from here?
40' WATFORD 0-1 ARSENAL
Bang! For all of their pretty football, Arsenal take the lead in the most simple of fashions. A corner is whipped in, Mertesacker, who is strangley being marked by Cleverley, rises high to power home an unstoppable header into the top corner. They barely deserve it, but the Gunners have a precious lead.
39' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Out of nowhere, Arsenal take the lead through Per Mertesacker - Vicarage Road is even more quiet now!
37' CROWD SUBDUED
It is a strange atmopshere at the moment as in the intial stages the home crowd were trying to urge their side to get at Arsenal, but that hasn't been the case and as a result they have been very reserved. However, it must be said that Marco Silva will be very happy with how his side are faring so far.
35' CRUCIAL TACKLE
Nice interplay on the edge of the box between Iwobi and Welbeck nearly sees the latter in on goal six yards out, but a vital last ditch challenge from the sliding Christian Kabasele puts paid to that idea. The old adage that Arsenal always try to walk it in is certainly on show here.
32' NICE LINK UP
There are plenty of nice touches on show from the likes of Lacazette, Welbeck and Iwobi for the men in blue, but it is all in front of a tight defence and isn't even close to penetrating. All bark and no bite from Arsenal so far.
30' LOOKING COMFORTABLE
With 15 minutes left on the clock until the break, we are very much at a stalemate at Vicarage Road, which will no doubt suit the home side better. A long way to go in this one, but as things stand they look very comfortable.
28' DOUBLED UP
The crowd are on their feet here as Richarlison sprints half the length of the pitch down the flank, taking on Koscielny with ease and eventually being crowded out by the retreating Bellerin, who is hardly short of pace. The Brazilian is again looking the main man for the hosts tonight.
26' SIMPLE OR BUST
The visitors are are trying their best to break Watford down, but the pattern is very monontonous at the moment - it is either try something simple or try to open the lock and fail miserably. Watford are equal to everything being thrown at them.
24' SETTLING INTO IT
After a dodgy opening 15 minutes, Marco Silva's side are just starting to settle into things now and this is pretty even at present. There is not much to get excited about from a neutral's perspective, however.
22' SANCHEZ A MISS?
The big news going into this game was that Alexis Sanchez is not even in the squad for this clash, while Mesut Ozil is still on the bench for the Gunners. How Arsene Wenger could do with his two star men here as they struggle to create clear-cut chances against stubborn opposition.
20' TOUGH CHANCE
That is far too easy for Abdoulaye Doucoure, who shrugs off Bellerin with the minimum of fuss before drilling in a cross that Roberto Pereyra tries to direct goalwards, but it was always tough to work the angle with that amount of pace on the ball. That is more like it from the Hornets, though.
18' 70% POSSESSION
The early statistics show that the away outfit have seen 70% of the ball in this first quarter-of-an-hour or so and they are looking more and more threatening as they start to get their eye in. Watford, on the other hand, are not offering too much in the final third.
15' SHOULD LOOK WIDE
Watford have been very narrow so far, but with the system that Arsenal are playing you sense that they will surely get most of their joy from the flanks. The problem is they don't really have any natural out-and-out wide players in their starting line-up.
13' INCHES AWAY
More joy down the right for the Gunners, which is where most of their attacks are coming from, and Hector Bellerin blasts in a fierce cross that is inches away from the head of Lacazette in the middle - the visitors certainly having the better of it so far.
11' RICHARLISON SET TO CARRY ON
The good news is that Richarlison looks like he will carry on for the hosts, who have yet to gather any sort of momentum so far - they need to get their foot on the ball.
9' RICHARLISON DOWN IN A HEAP
These are worrying times for Watford here as Richarlison, their key man as of late, is down in a heap in the centre circle following a 50-50. He has been down for a while and he looks in some serious pain here - the home fans will have everything crossed that he will be fine to continue.
7' FIRST OPENING
The first bit of room fror either side here as Lacazette runs onto a ball down the right channel, but with time on his hands he elects to cross first time and it is easily cleared. Had he taken a touch he could have looked upwards to see plenty of options in there for him.
5' HOTLY CONTESTED
The game is being played at a fierce pace at the moment, with both sides surrendering possession relatively easily now as they both press high up the pitch. The home crowd are already right behind their team.
3' CONTROLLED START
It is Arsenal who are seeing most of the ball early doors, with some patient possession play in the middle third. You get the sense there is going to be a lot of that today - can they break their opponents down, though?
1' KICK OFF
Here we go then - we're up and running on a bright evening at Vicarage Road.
0' FULL TEAMS
Watford: Gomes, Femenia, Mariappa, Britos, Holebas, Doucoure, Cleverley, Kabasele, Pereyra, Gray, Richarlison. Subs: Karnezis, Janmaat, Wague, Capoue, Watson, Deeney, Carrillo. Arsenal: Cech, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Monreal, Bellerin, Elneny, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Iwobi, Welbeck, Lacazette. Subs: Ospina, Holding, Ozil, Coquelin, Wilshere, Giroud, Walcott.
0' IS ARSENE GUNNER STEADY THE SHIP?
In many ways Arsenal are one of the more predictable sides in the Premier League. They get off to a slow start, lose against the big boys, then go on a good run against the so-called “lesser teams” and people start to wonder whether they have rediscovered their mojo. Since a 4-0 humbling at the hands of top-four rivals Liverpool, the Gunners have been in all sorts of form, but they have yet to come across anyone who is going to challenge them for a league position come the end of the campaign – or so you would think. However, this is surely the toughest test yet for Arsene Wenger’s men since that Anfield debacle, so if they can escape Vicarage Road with a full share of the spoils today then those hopeful voices suggesting the real Arsenal are back will just start to take on a more realistic tone.
0' HORNETS BUZZING UNDER SILVA
For the last two seasons, Watford have started very brightly in the top flight only to lose their way as the campaign started to draw to a close. That was certainly the case under both Quique Sanches Flores and Walter Mazzarri and both managers paid for these respective tailspins with their jobs as neither managed to last beyond a single term in charge of the Hornets. This time around and new man Marco Silva is impressing fans from all quarters and there just seems a sense that this time the powers that be at the club have found the man to guide them forward in the long term, as the former Olympiakos and Hull boss continues to seamlessly adapt to his new surroundings. They currently sit in eighth position in the table and a win this afternoon could well see them end the day in the top four – now is as good a time as any to pick up your first home victory of 2017-18.
