Napoli vs. Manchester City
Minute Commentary
Thank you for joining us for another enthralling week of Champions League fixtures. Please join us when our coverage continues for the fifth week in slightly less than three weeks time! Have a wonderful night!
This evening's second half was indeed just as entertaining as promised. In total we saw four goals in the final 45 minutes of play, each of which were taken sensationally, but in particular the two incredible counter attack goals scored by Manchester City. Napoli can complain that the third goal tallied by City was against the run of play, however their leaky defense and inability to defend the counter should be pointed out as an alternative argument. Napoli's Champions League dreams are a faint hope at this point. They must now redirect focus on their incredible Serie A run and seek to keep the top of the table through the end of the season. Manchester City have become the first English club to ever defeat Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo.
Felix Brych blows his whistle to bring today's affair to an end. Manchester City take the three points with a well deserved 4-2 win in Naples!
90' GOAL!
Raheem Sterling sends City up 4-2! Yet another blistering counter attack leads to a completely unmarked Sky Blue player in the area. De Bruyne ultimately picked out Sterling who, in turn, drove home a right footed strike that will seal the deal for the visitors.
A sensational free kick by Jose Callejon finds the head of Raul Albiol on the far post, however the headed effort is not place on target and is quickly dealt with by the City defenders.
An incredible cut back cross from the magical David Silva finds a streaking Bernardo Silva inside the area. The shot is taken at the near post, however the attempt is sent a bit too high and sails out for a goal kick.
Pepe Reina holds firm against a powerful strike from distance by the substitute Bernardo Silva! The left footed shot appeared destined for the bottom right corner of net, however Reina made an outstanding diving save to deny the Manchester club of their fourth of the night.
Manchester City are putting on classy display of keep away, on the road and against tough competition nonetheless. Napoli have chased the ball around the pitch for several consecutive minutes and appear no closer to dispossessing City than they did at the beginning.
Jorginho makes way late for the flying Algerian winger Adam Ounas. Undoubtedly this is a purely attacking move as Napoli must equalize at the very least to extend their hopes of advancing into the next round of the Champions League.
The resulting free kick is struck by the German Leroy Sane. Sane's left footed shot is hit with pace, power, and spin, but the dipping ball is placed a few inches too high and goes out of bounds for a goal kick.
Fernandinho leads a somewhat halfhearted counter attack directly through the center of the midfield, however his run forces poor challenge by Kalidou Koulibaly that earns Manchester City a free kick just outside the area.
Bernardo Silva enters the match in place of Sergio Aguero. The newly crowned all-time leader in goals scored for Manchester City exits the game just a few moments after netting his 178th goal for the club.
The momentum of this game has once again swung back the other way, against the run of play many would say. Now it is Napoli who must find a higher level of play as their entire Champions League campaign hangs in the jeopardy.
An incredible last gasp save by Ederson Moraes on Jose Callejon gave the Azzurri a corner kick from the right flag. The following set piece resulted in a clearance that sprung a break for City led by Leroy Sane. Sergio Aguero ultimately found the ball on his foot all alone in the opposing penalty area and slotted home a right footed shot to put the visitors up 3-2!
69' GOAL!
Manchester City have taken the lead! Sergio Aguero has broken the Manchester City all time scoring record!
A clearance is blocked by the foot of Raheem Sterling and fortuitously falls to the feet of Ilkay Gundogan! Gundogan weighs his options and slots a pass through the back line, however Aguero is adjudged to have been offside.
Manchester City must dig deep and find the energy to stay in this match for another 25 minutes of play. The penalty kick goal from Jorginho has rejuvenated the Azzurri fans who are willing their team to find the lead!
62' GOAL
GOAL! Napoli equalize from the spot! Jorginho calmly approached the ball and using his right foot passed the ball with his right foot into the bottom left corner of the net. Ederson Moraes was completely fooled and dove the other direction. We're tied 2-2 in Naples!
A penalty has been awarded to Napoli! Leroy just catches Raul Albiol inside the area and Felix Brych correctly awards the foul!
Manchester City are currently imposing their will upon this evening's fixture. Their stout defense has turned away every probing attack by the home team and when they obtain possession they refuse to give it back easily.
Lorenzo Insigne continues the trend set by John Stones! Insigne deked his marker out of his shoes and blasted a high drive from near the edge of the area. His shot rang the bar, nearly in the exact spot Stones hit in the first half, and flies back into play.
The unquestionably talented Dries Mertens attempts a solo run, even though he has options to his left and right, however the Sky Blue back line is up to the task and expertly dispossess the threatening Belgian just on the edge of the box.
The Azzurri are beginning to push masses of men forward in order to find an equalizer fast. This style of play will eventually just leave them more vulnerable on defense, however at the moment it is creating opportunities in the very least.
Leroy Sane sent in a corner kick from the left flag that ultimately found the head of John Stones! Stones once again thumps the crossbar, however this time the ball ricocheted down, bounced into the net, and popped out. At first play continued, but the whistle was then blown indicating a goal for City! The visitors are up 2-1!
48' GOAL!
GOAL! John Stones has found the back of the net just moments into the second half! City lead 2-1!
Napoli begin the half flying down the right wing! Jose Callejon drives down the line past a stagnant Fabian Delph and sends in an outswinging cross, however his pass is headed away by Nicolas Otamendi.
The second half is underway in Naples! The teams have switched ends so therefore the visitors will now attack from left to right. There were no changes made at the break by either Maurizio Sarri or Pep Guardiola.
Thus far today's match of league leaders has certainly lived up to the hype! The first 45 minutes featured play that flew from end to end that was controlled by Napoli early, while Manchester City dominated play late. Lorenzo Insigne's goal came from an incredible sequence of passes that left the Manchester City back four in the dust, however the Blues found their true form and quickly found an equalizer. The visitors, though, seem to be destined to a score another goal at some point based on Napoli's inability to deal with crosses. Can the Azzurri flip the script and win their second Champions League match in the group stage?
Felix Brych blows his whistle to bring an exciting first half to a close! The Serie A leaders and the Premier League leaders head to the break tied 1-1!
Kevin De Bruyne bobs and weaves his way brilliantly through the Napoli defense and picks out a sprinting Raheem Sterling on the right wing! Sterling lifts another cross into the box, however this time it is dealt with clinically by the center back tandem of Napoli.
Raheem Sterling charges into the box and races to the end line! A regrouping Kalidou Koulibaly appears to shove Sterling in the back sending the winger to the turf inside the box, however the play amounts in nothing more than a goal kick for Napoli.
Ilkay Gundogan swings in another cross from the right side of the box that is initially cleared by the Napoli defenders, however their clearance is directed right to John Stones. Stones leaps high in the air and powers a header toward goal! The shot thuds off the cross bar, shaking the entire goal frame, and falls back into play where it is dealt with again by the Napoli back line.
City become quite casual with the ball which nearly turns disastrous for the Cityzens! Fernandinho is ultimately forced to hold back Dries Mertens to ensure his team regain possession, yet again no foul is given by the German official.
The relentless pressure from the City attack finally finds a way through as Nicolas Otamendi equalizes for the visitors! A floated cross from the right wing by Ilkay Gundogan perfectly connected with the head of Otamendi who redirected the ball into the upper corner of the helpless Pepe Reina's net.
35' GOAL
GOAL! Manchester City have tied it at 1!
Sergio Aguero was just a few inches away from finding the equalizer! A cut back cross from the right wing found the Napoli defense napping as it picked out a wide open Aguero. The Argentine's shot was then deflected just wide of the near post.
Felix Brych is letting a considerable amount of fouls go uncalled! A chipped pass to Ilkay Gundogan leads to the German hitting the field hard and complaining that he was leveled over by Allan.
Faouzi Ghoulam has gone down with a knock of some sort which will force an immediate change, however play continues on as the player sits on the pitch. Eventually, play is halted long enough for the player to exit the pitch and Christian Maggio enters in his place.
A quickly taken free kick leads to a whipped in cross by Leroy Sane that pings around the area and falls to the feet of the dangerous Sergio Aguero! Aguero powers up and blasts a shot, however his attempt cannot find a route through the mass of legs and bodies in the box.
Jose Callejon slides into Fabian Delph near the sidelines in what initially looks to be a questionable challenge. The fans in Naples go silent for a moment until they realize a throw in for their side has been given. The City players appeal for a foul, but none is given.
An incisive series of passes highlighted by a give-and-go between Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens essentially sent Insigne into the box completely alone. Insigne made no mistake of the chance, using the inside of his right foot to bend the ball around Ederson and into the back of the net. Napoli lead 1-0 after 20 minutes of play!
21' GOAL
GOAL! Lorenzo Insigne puts Napoli up 1-0!
Jorginho lofts a picture perfect long ball over the Manchester City back line that finds Dries Mertens! Mertens collects the ball outside the box right before the whistle is blown to halt play. Mertens was caught merely a few inches offsides, however it was indeed the correct call by the linesman.
Lorenzo Insigne picks up the ball in his defensive third and leads a counter attack that appears to stretch the Manchester City defense! Insigne decides to center the ball and tries to find Allan with a pass, but his ball is placed well behind the sprinting midfielder and the City defense pounce on the loose ball.
Marek Hamsik sends in Dries Mertens with a beautiful through ball from the center of the midfield! Mertens considers his options and attempts to chip a charging Ederson with his left, however his shot is hit directly to the City keeper who calmly catches the effort.
Napoli's intense high press cannot be broken by the visitors at the moment. The Azzurri have already forced several turnovers within the City half and look to be on pace for more.
Dries Mertens earns a free kick in a dangerous area of the attacking half, however his ensuing shot is well under hit. The effort strikes the 3 man wall and Napoli are forced to recycle play back to their defenders.
Marek Hamsik sets his sights on goal from a long way out and drives a shot on target! The attempt is struck with decent pace, however it is hit right to the Manchester City keeper Ederson Moraes who makes an easy save.
Again the Sky Blues work out an excellent series of passes that sends Raheem Sterling into the box, however a lovely toe poke from Elseid Hysaj dispossesses the Englishman and sends play up field. Sterling appears disgusted to have not received a foul, but Felix Brych ignores his pleas.
Raheem Sterling picks out an open Leroy Sane who makes his way into the center of the Azzurri penalty area. Sane attempts to send a shot on net, however his effort is blocked almost immediately by Raul Albiol. City on the attack early tonight!
We are underway at the Stadio San Paolo in Naples! Napoli will attack from left to right during the first half and are dressed in their blue and white kits, while the visitors wear their alternate Nike kits which feature a blocky black camouflage design and sky blue accents. Bundesliga staple Felix Brych will oversee tonight’s match alongside a crew of his German compatriots.
Today is the return leg of a fixture that took place two weeks ago that ended in a 2-1 victory for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The Cityzens found the scoreboard early on the back of a 9th minute goal from Raheem Sterling, followed shortly thereafter by a Gabriel Jesus goal in the 13th minute. The Azzurri came alive late, cutting the lead in half with a penalty kick goal by Diawara, but eventually fell short.

Paralleling Manchester City, Napoli came out of the gates flying and have earned the incredible record of 10-1-0 with 32 goals scored while allowing just 8 goals to their opposition. The only time the Serie A leaders failed to secure three points occurred against Inter Milan on October 21st, however their Champions League performances have left much to be desired. The Azzurri sit at third in Group F with one win and two losses. Napoli must turn their form around in European play quickly if they hope to establish themselves as an Italian giant and a match at home against a tough Manchester City team is the perfect opportunity.
It should be noted that the Cityzens also struggled against a feisty Wolverhampton Wanderers team last Tuesday in the Carabao Cup, a game that saw the Wolves fall in penalties after holding the Premier League leaders scoreless for 120 minutes. Perhaps Napoli can take advantage of another midweek fixture and cause the Sky Blues a true headache.
Manchester City continue to reign atop the Premier League table, however they enter today’s match versus Napoli after a slight missteps in their last league game against West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies took advantage of a speculative defense on Saturday when they netted two goals against a squad that had only conceded an astounding total of just four goals in league play up until that point. City’s powerhouse of an offense, alternatively, showed no signs of regression as they scored three goals, a total that they have failed to reach only once in their previous seven Premier League fixtures.
Hello and welcome to our coverage of what is sure to be an enticing match between Napoli and Manchester City! Kickoff is still over an hour away, but stay tuned for our match preview and analysis of this evening’s starting lineups!
