Manchester City vs. Napoli
Minute Commentary
90' MAN CITY DEFEAT NAPOLI
They made hard work of it, but Man City's perfect record in the Champions League this season is maintained with a 2-1 victory over Napoli at the Etihad Stadium.
90' LAST CHANCE
That could be that. A promising attack ends when a dangerous looking cross from Allan towards Callejon is claimed bravely by Ederson. Less than a minute left now.
90' KEEP IT IN THE CORNER
Man City are now wasting time near the corner flag - who would have thought it would come to this after 15 minutes of this match?
90' FIVE MINUTES ADDED ON
Hang on to your hats folks, there will be five minutes of injury time in Manchester, one of which has already passed.
90' JESUS COMES OFF
With injury time approaching, Guardiola shores up his defence and wastes some time by taking off Gabriel Jesus and bringing on Danilo. They are inching closer to a huge victory.
88' KEEP BALL
With just a matter of minutes left now, Man City are indulging in a game of keep ball to try and preserve their lead. Napoli very much looking a team that are realising they have left things too late.
86' ELSEWHERE IN THE GROUP
As we tick into the final five minutes of the North West of England, it is worth telling you that the other game in this group currently sees Shakhtar Donetsk leading Feyenoord 2-1 in Holland.
84' ANOTHER HUGE SAVE
Kevin de Bruyne running the show again, slipping in Sane on the angle, but the wide man sees his dinked attempt well stopped by the onrushing Pepe Reina. This is such an open game now, but time is running out for the Italian outfit.
82' OUNAS FOR HYSAJ
Exciting wide man Adam Ounas has come on for Napoli, with Elseid Hysaj the man to make way for him. Just less than ten minutes left on the clock now.
80' HALF CHANCE
Everyone holds their breath at the Etihad Stadium as Allan gives City a taste of their own medicine, winning the ball high up the pitch and releasing Mertens down the middle. He has Stones and Otamendi for company, with Ederson well off his line, but instead of trying to chip the keeper, he goes for power and sends his shot well wide.
78' GUNDOGAN COMES ON
Pep Guardiola fancies a bit more midfield solidity as his team find themselvs hanging on a tad here, with Ilkay Gundogan coming on for David Silva with about 15 minutes left in Manchester.
76' DISALLOWED GOAL
Man City think they have restored their two-goal cushion, but the flag denied them. De Bruyne played a well-weighted pass through the channel for Jesus, who rounded Reina before slotting in, but the Brazilian had just ran too early and the decision was correct.
74' MAN CITY 2-1 NAPOLI
Marauding left-back Faouzi Ghoulam goes on a wonderful run down that flank, drifting past man after mand and easing into the area before being clumsily upended by Fernandinho. Definite penalty and Amadou Diawara makes no mistake with his firm spot kick into the bottom corner. Nerves aplenty at the Etihad Stadium.
73' GOOOAAALLL!!!
That's how you do it Dries - Amadou Diawara slides the spot kick into the bottom corner and this is very much game on!
72' PENALTY TO NAPOLI
It's another penalty! Napoli have another massive chance to make it 2-1!
70' SILVA REPLACES STERLING
Another fine night's work comes to an end from Raheem Sterling, with the winger replaced for the final 20 minutes by Bernardo Silva.
68' NEARLY FROM A CORNER
The away side continue to build some momentum. They force a corner after concentrating their attack towards the inexperienced Fabian Delph down City's left. Faouzi Ghoulam takes it and it nearly sneaks in at the near post, but Ederson gets across to palm it away. Signs of nerves here from City?
66' MONUMENTAL CHANCE
Heroic from John Stones, but how hasn't Marek Hamsik scored?! Dries Mertens gets free down the right of the area, squares it for Hamsik after committing Ederson and with an empty net to aim at, the Slovakian sees his shot blocked by Stones - outrageously good defending.
64' EASING OFF
Just a few signs here that the hosts are content with what they have got. They have been playing with significantly less intensity in the last few minutes and the visitors might just sense something here.
62' DOES AGUERO COME ON?
Does Pep Guardiola start resting players now this none is nearly done ahead of the return of the Premier League at the weekend? Does he bring Sergio Aguero off the bench following his recovery from a broken rib? Many questions still for Guardiola to ponder.
60' HALF AN HOUR REMAINS
We are into the last 30 minutes at the Etihad Stadium and as comfortable as the hosts look, they will want another goal to make this safe. If Napoli were to find a goal in the next few minutes, the home crowd would become very nervy you sense.
58' INSIGNE LIMPS OFF
As if things couldn't get any worse for Napoli, one of their star-studded forward line has to limp off, with Lorenzo Insigne being replaced by Allan. Maurizio Sarri will be hoping the diminutive forward will be fit to face Inter at the weekend.
56' WINNING IT BACK WITH EASE
Napoli do look a little more adventurous so far, and that is understandable given their position, but it must be noted that City continue to nick the ball off them at will. This has been a masterstroke so far from Pep Guardiola.
54' MORE PRESSURE
The City juggernaut continues. Jesus is released on the break down the right and he is faced up by Albiol, who does really well to slide in and tackle the striker. The loose ball falls to Sane, who shifts it onto his right foot, but his shot flies just wide of the near post.
52' NAPOLI PRESSINH HIGHER
There has been no change in personnel from either side, but there does look to have been a slight shuffle in tactics from the visitors, as they are pressing much higher at the start of this second period, causing a couple of nervy moments in the City back four. That is what we all anticipated from the start, but it just never happened.
50' WASTE FROM SILVA
It is not often you say this, but David Silva is selfish and makes completely the wrong decision here. The Spaniard flies forward on a counter after yet another turnover, but with Sane screaming for it in room on his left, the midfielder tries to take on two men 18 yards out and easily gets caught on the ball. Poor.
48' ANOTHER NEARLY MOMENT
The hosts start like a team possessed again as Raheem Sterling sprints into all sorts of room on the right on a rapid counter and tries to find Jesus in the centre, but a last ditch tackle from Kalidou Koulibaly prevents what would have been a simple finish for the Brazilian.
46' BACK UNDERWAY
We are back in action at the Etihad Stadium - will City continue where they left off, or is there to be a sting in the tail from the Serie A outfit?
45' MAN CITY 2-0 NAPOLI
This has been a ridiculously good performance from Man City which has made a mockery of the suggestions of the majority, this observer included, that this would be a tight heavyweight clash. Far from it. The hosts have been firmly in charge and dominated from the first minute, grabbing an early lead when David Silva pulled the ball back from the left byline for Kyle Walker, whose blocked shot was pounced on by Raheem Sterling, drilling the ball home from ten yards. It was 2-0 minutes later when Kevin de Bruyne's cross from the right was tapped in by Gabriel Jesus. Pep Guardiola's men missed many chances to extend their lead, with Jesus seeing a shot cleared off the line and missing a one-on-one from the angle with Pepe Reina moments before the break, and the Citizens were nearly made to pay. Kyle Walker needlessly pulled down Raul Albiol in the area from a right-wing cross, but Dries Mertens' penalty lacked conviction and Ederson made the save. City in charge at the break - what have the Partenopei got left? Join us right here in a tick to find out.
45' CITY IN CHARGE AT THE BREAK
There goes the half time whistle and Man City are all over this one, leading Napoli 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
45' HUGE SAVE
So close to 3-0. Marek Hamsik, normally so reliable, is caught on the ball in his own half and you know the rest. City turn defence into attack high up the pitch and get Sane in behind. His cross is overhit, but Sterling keeps it alive, teeing up Jesus with a pullback, but the youngster's shot is smothered by Reina. How good a first half has this been from City?
43' ANOTHER CRUCIAL BLOCK
This is more like it from the Premier League outfit as they utilise the ever-available Leroy Sane on the left. The German's wicked cross looks destined to be tapped home at the far post by Sterling, but right in the nick of time Faouzi Ghoulam slides in to avert the danger.
41' NAPOLI FINISHING STRONG
Ederson may well have saved it, but that penalty has seemingly stung Man City and Napoli are ending the half very strongly. City will not want to go into the break with anything less than a two-goal lead.
39' MORE ON THAT PENALTY
The penalty was given when Kyle Walker needlessly hauled down Raul Albiol as a dinked ball came into the area from the right. Just a quick reminder that the hosts cannot let their concentration levels dip, as dominant as they have been at the Etihad Stadium.
38' PENALTY SAVED BY EDERSON
Saved! It simply hasn't been Napoli's night. Dries Mertens, undoubtedly one of the world's best players, blasts his spot kick straight down the middle and Ederson continues to impress at City with a save down low. Let off for the Citizens.
37' PENALTY TO NAPOLI
Where on earth has this come from? Napoli have a penalty and a massive opportunity to reduce the arrears!
35' POOR CONTROL
Leroy Sane is having a field day, but he has to do better here. Yet another turnover high up the pitch and Sane is the beneficary, running into the box one-on-one with his full-back, but taking a poor touch to lose control of the ball and the chance disappears as quickly as it came. There is no way City are going to leave it at two goals.
33' SPELL OF POSSESSION
This has been the away outfit's best moment of the game and the only thing they have done is passed the ball around in City's half for a moment or so, without creating anything. If nothing else, it takes the pressure off their backline, if only for a few seconds. They need half time - badly.
31' NAPOLI NEED HALF TIME
A penny for Maurizio Sarri's thoughts? One of Europe's most innovative and reknowned coaches, and rightly so, and his team are being taught a lesson here and we are barely half-an-hour in. Where do the Serie A side go from here?
29' OFF THE LINE
This is simply relentless. The home side are making Napoli look like amateurs. This time the danger comes from the right, where Walker's ball into the mixer bounces off John Stones into the path of Jesus, who fires nicely on the spin, forcing Reina to make a stunning save down low. The ball trickles goalwards, but Koulibaly is on hand to boot clear right on the line.
27' DANGEROUS POSITION
Wave after wave. Man City have a free-kick in a very dangerous area, 20 yards out, just right of centre. Sane and De Bruyne stand over it.
25' OFF THE BAR
That deserved to go in, it really did. Leroy Sane again makes inroads down the left flank, bides his time and pulls it back nicely for the arriving Kevin de Bruyne 20 yards out. The man of the moment curls a gorgeous effort towards the top corner, but his shot strikes the bar and comes back agonisingly short of the line. That would have been outstanding.
23' DOMINATING POSSESSION
There has been no sign of Man City sitting on their lead, or taking a break as they continue to win the ball back off the Italian side at will and then dominate possession when they do have it. Make no mistake, this has been a seriously impressive performance from the Citizens thus far.
21' WHAT DO NAPOLI DO?
Normally at times like this, a team getting the beating that Napoli are start to shut up shop and make it a case of damage limitation. I'm not too sure that this team know any other way to play, however, and it will surely just play into the hosts' hands?
19' VITAL CHALLENGE
This is a huge challenge from Raul Albiol. David Silva spots Leroy Sane sprinting in behind down the left and is inches away from finding him bar a late sliding tackle from Albiol. Had he not made that, Sane would have squared for Jesus for a tap-in. This could be any score, you know.
17' NAPOLI CAN'T GET OUT
There were rumblings in the week that Napoli might field a weakened team ahead of a mammoth clash against Inter at the weekend. They have fielded a strong team, but they may just be wishing they hadn't, because this has been a fruitless exercise so far.
15' MAN CITY 2-0 NAPOLI
This has been men against boys, not two of Europe's best teams going head-to-head. It is all about Kevin de Bruyne again, though, as the Belgian saunters down the right side of the area and floats a wonderful cross into the danger area, where the waiting Gabriel Jesus simply taps home. There are surely more to come the way this is going as well.
14' GOOOAAALLLL!!!
This one already looks over. Gabriel Jesus has doubled Man City's lead with just 14 minutes on the clock!
12' PRESSING HIGH
The visitors need to get their foot on the ball, because they are simply being suffocated. Normally known for his silky skills on the ball, Gabriel Jesus works tirelessly out of possession to win it back high up the field, but his dangerous cross is blocked behind for a corner by Kalidou Koulibaly.
10' MAN CITY 1-0 NAPOLI
They have been all over this match so far and now City have the lead. David Silva escapes down the left and pulls a cross into the area for Kyle Walker. The full-back's shot is blocked, but only as far as the waiting Raheem Sterling, who lashes the ball home with Pepe Reina nowhere. The Pep Guardiola bandwagon just keeps on rolling.
9' GOOOAAALLL!!!
That didn't take long did it? Raheem Sterling gives Man City the lead just shy of the ten-minute mark!
7' IDENTICAL FORMATIONS
There have been a lot of similarities drawn between the two teams in the build-up to this match and they are both using the exact same formation this evening, with City going with a 4-3-3 - a system their opponents have been successful exponents of for a long time now.
5' SILVA AND DE BRUYNE PULLING STRINGS
As per usual, the main men in the middle third for the hosrs are pulling the strings, with Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva conducting things in these opening minutes - Napoli have yet to get going here.
3' CITY ON TOP
It has been somewhat of a conservative start from Napoli, with City making much of the early running. They are targetting their opponents' right side more, with Leory Sane seeing a lot of the ball.
1' KICK OFF
We're up and running at the Etihad Stadium - bring on the goals.

0' SARRI'S DARK HORSES ON THE CHARGE
The opinion that Napoli play the best football in Europe is one that has been bubbling under the surface for some time now, but there aren’t many that would disagree with that statement based on their performances this season. In short, Maurizio Sarri’s men have been absolutely outstanding as they top Serie A with a 100% record in their eight matches thus far, with an away loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in their first game of this group the only blot on their copybook so far in the campaign. Pep Guardiola has gone so far as to label the Italian giants one of the top three teams in Europe and this evening will be a perfect opportunity for Sarri and his men to prove him right.
0' GUARDIOLA GUNNING FOR GLORY IN EUROPE
There has always been a sense that, as good as they may seem in England among the hustle and bustle of domestic competition, Manchester City can’t quite cut it in the more refined arena that is the Champions League. However, this time around things feel a little different and that is exactly why Pep Guardiola was put in charge in the first place – to expand City’s horizons and turn them into a global superpower. Obviously, that is a long way off yet, but the Citizens are looking every inch one of the best sides in Europe at the moment as they are breezing past everyone that stands in their way, whether that be in domestic or continental competition. Top of the Premier League and top of Group F in this tournament, but City tonight face a team that is arguably in a vein of form richer than perhaps even they are…..
